What is the most important "first-timer" beach kit for a family?
For a safer and fun first experience, the essentials are all about protection. We recommend a long-sleeve rash vest and sun cream for sun safety, and a pair of aqua shoes to protect feet from sharp objects. A soft surfboard or surf mat is the perfect way to introduce kids to the fun of the waves.
What's the difference between a cheap "toy" board and a quality soft surfboard?
This is a key quality difference. A cheap, toy-store board is often just a piece of styrofoam covered in a fabric. The quality softboards we stock are built with durable, waterproof cores and tough outer skins, just like a real surfboard. They are designed to last for many seasons if looked after, making them a much better investment.
How do I care for all this beach gear to make it last?
This is the most important pro-tip. Salt and sun are the enemies of your gear. After every trip to the beach, you must rinse everything—your rashie, your board, your aqua shoes—in fresh water to remove corrosive salt. Then, let it all dry completely in the shade. Direct sunlight will destroy the glues in a softboard and degrade the elastic in a rash vest.
