A Tackle Shop Guide to the Bite Science Squid Slayer

Squid jigs, or 'egi', are a product we get a lot of questions about. Anglers come into the shop, see a wall of bright colours and sizes, and aren't sure where to start. The Bite Science Squid Slayer is a jig we've stocked because it's a solid, reliable option that covers all the bases for our local squidding. It has a good, balanced action and, most importantly, strong, sharp prongs for a dependable hook-up.

A Note From Our Local Experts

"When the sun goes down, squidding off the local breakwalls here in the Illawarra is a bit of a tradition. We chose to stock the Squid Slayer jigs because they have the two things I look for: a good, balanced fall in the water and strong, sharp prongs that don't just straighten out on a big calamari. For a session drifting the weed beds in Lake Illawarra or casting off the rocks, they just work."

Decoding the Squid Slayer Features: What Matters

This lure is built with specific features for Australian conditions. Here’s what they mean for you:

Strong Stainless Steel Prongs: The jig uses a high-quality set of stainless double prongs. They are sharp for a solid hookset on a light tap, and strong enough to resist bending or pulling out during the fight with a large squid.
Tough Cloth Wrapping: The cloth wrapping is a durable, high-density weave. This is important as it's more resistant to being torn up by a squid's beak or getting ripped on rocks and reef compared to a standard, loosely-wrapped cloth.
Balanced Darting Action: The lure has been weighted to create a natural "darting" action when you whip the rod, and a balanced, appealing sink on the pause. This sink is when most squid will attack it.

How to Choose & Fish Your Jig

Success with egi fishing comes down to matching the lure to the conditions and using the right retrieve.

Choosing a Size & Weight

The size you choose is all about the depth you're fishing and the speed of your drift.

  • Size 2.5: This is the lightest. It's the one to use for shallow water (1-3m) or on calm days with no drift, as its slow sink looks very natural.
  • Size 3.0: This is the all-rounder. It's the most common size and is perfect for general purpose squidding in 3-8m of water.
  • Size 3.5: This is the heavyweight. Use this to get down deep (8m+) or when the wind and current are strong and you need to stay in contact with the bottom.

The "Lift and Drop" Technique

This is the classic, effective retrieve. Cast out and let the jig sink. Then, give 2-3 sharp lifts (or "whips") of your rod tip. This makes the jig dart upwards. After the lifts, drop your rod tip and let the jig sink back down on a semi-slack line. This pause is the most important part—90% of squid will grab the jig as it's sinking.

Guide to Colours

The colour you choose can make a big difference based on the light and water clarity.

UV White / Golden Brown Good in clear water and during bright, sunny days.
Pink & Purple A classic, reliable choice for dawn, dusk, and overcast days.
Orange & Red A solid option for fishing in dirtier or stained water.
Green Back A good choice for fishing over or near weed beds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best all-round size to start with?

If you're just starting out and only want to grab one size, the 3.0 is the most common and versatile. It will cover the widest range of situations you'll face from a boat or from the shore.

What's the difference between a "UV" and a "Glow" jig?

That's a common confusion. "UV" (like UV White) paint reflects ultraviolet light, which squid can see very well. This makes it a great choice for fishing during the day, even on overcast days. "Glow" (luminous) paint is different: you "charge" it with a torch, and it glows in the dark. This is a popular choice for night fishing.

Do these jigs only work on Australian squid?

That's a fair question. The short answer is no, they will work on squid just about anywhere in the world because the design is a proven one. The main "Australian" part of this jig is the colour range. The colours (like Golden Brown to mimic prawns, or Green Back for our weed beds) have been specifically selected because they are known to work well on our local species, like Southern Calamari.

Why do I need a special 'egi' (squid) rod?

You can use a standard light spin rod, but a dedicated egi rod has a very different action. It has a much softer, more parabolic tip. This soft tip is designed to 'whip' the jig to get that sharp darting action, and then it acts like a shock absorber when you hook a squid, preventing you from pulling the prongs out of their soft tentacles.

How do I stop the cloth from tearing?

The cloth on these is tough, but the #1 enemy is rock. Try to be aware of the bottom and avoid letting your jig drag or snag on sharp reef. The other main problem is puffer fish (toads) and leatherjackets, which will chew the cloth. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about them other than move spots!
