A Tackle Shop Guide to 10 Foot Rock and Surf Combos
Rock fishing is a tug-of-war between you, the fish, and the ground underneath you. The rod needs length to hold line off the rock face, and enough low-down power to stop a hard-running fish before it finds a ledge. The reel needs spool capacity for deep-water runs and drag that holds steady under load — current and swell don't give it an easy time. A standard general purpose or estuary setup isn't built for any of that. And that is why we have put together a range of 10ft fishing combos for sale.
A Note From Our Local Experts
"Rock fishing around the Illawarra coast is one form of fishing that I enjoy the most. I chase species like Kingfish, Salmon, Tailor, and Bonito, and 10ft is my preferred length when fishing the local platforms. It's the right size for throwing metal lures from elevation and has enough purchase to land fish relatively easily — Blackhead at Gerroa and Kiama Blowhole Point are where I fish my 10ft combos from the most.
I've tried 8ft for spinning from the rocks. It works, but it doesn't have the same reach as a 10ft setup, and that extra 2ft can often make all the difference in casting distance and landing fish on the local ledges. One of the most practical reasons to buy a 10ft fishing combo is that it doubles up as a beach rod. If you are looking for a two-in-one combo, the 10ft is my recommendation."

What We Look For in a 10ft Rock and Surf Combo
We source factory combos as well as select individual rods and reels ourselves to create a range of setups suitable for Australian rock and beach fishing. Options in our 10ft combo range typically meet the following criteria:
✔
Rod Length: 10ft minimum to help with casting distance and keep your line off the rock face when fighting and landing fish, which can reduce some level of line abrasion.
✔
Rod Power for Structure Fishing: Rock fishing often means targeting species that live around structure — drummer and snapper under ledges. These fish will often head for cover the moment they feel the hook. The combos in our rock and surf range are built with enough backbone to help turn that first run. Check individual listings for line ratings — a few lighter options are in here too for light rock and surf fishing for species like whiting and luderick.
✔
Reel Line Capacity: A 6000 to 10000 size reel features on many of our 10ft rock and surf combos. The larger spool is capable of holding heavier line classes and provides sufficient capacity to target the species commonly found across Australia's coastline.
Frequently Asked Questions
What species are commonly targeted from the rocks with a 10ft combo?
The primary targets on Australian rock platforms are bonito, kingfish, tailor, and Australian salmon. Snapper are often also caught from deeper rock platforms and headlands, particularly in southern NSW and Victoria.
What species are commonly targeted from the beach with a 10ft combo?
When you take a 10ft setup to the sand, you are generally focusing on high-speed spinning or bait fishing. Australian Salmon would be the primary target for spinning, while for bait fishing, Sand whiting, bream, dart, and flathead are among the top targets.
Can a 10ft rod handle "lifting" a fish up a rock ledge?
It depends on the rod's construction. If you have a high-performance graphite rod, the best practice is to never dead-lift a fish; use the swell, a landing net, or a gaff. Graphite can fail under high-pressure angles (high sticking). However, if you are using a fibreglass or composite rod like an Ugly Stik, the blank is designed to handle added angler punishment and can often handle more aggressive lifting and high-sticking in the wash.
Why do we pair 10ft rock rods with 6000–10000 size reels?
Two main reasons: balance and capacity. A longer rod can often shift the balance point away from your hand. A bigger reel pulls it back. Get that wrong, and you feel it in your wrist before the session's half done. The other reason is what you're fishing for. Kingfish and salmon can strip 100 metres of line before you've thought about it. A 6000 to 10000 size reel has the spool depth and drag stability to put up a good fight.
What safety considerations should I be aware of when rock fishing?
Never turn your back on the ocean. Watch the swell for at least 20 minutes before stepping onto a ledge — sets come in bigger than they look, and the water moves fast on a rock platform. Wear a PFD and spiked rock boots. This is not comfort gear, it's safety gear.
