A Tackle Shop Guide to the Rapala RapStack Tackle Tray

It might seem like a small thing for tackle and lure storage, but one of the biggest frustrations we see in the shop is cheap tackle trays and the problems that come with them. Anglers come every now and again holding a tray with a broken latch, a snapped hinge, or a lid that has warped after one hot day in the boat, letting salt water get in and rust their hooks. The Rapala RapStack is a proper modern storage system, not just another disposable box, and it was built to fix those exact issues.

A Note From Our Local Experts

"After 20+ years in the shop and in my own fishing experience, I can tell you the first things to fail on any tackle box are often the latches and hinges. A broken latch means you've got hooks and lures spilling everywhere. The RapStack system is built from a much tougher, more rigid plastic that resists that heat warping, and the 'Quick Latch System' is a solid, single-hand latch that feels much more durable than the flimsy clips on generic trays. It's a proper fishing storage solution, not just another brand of disposable box."
- Ben Czulowski, Owner, Fishing Tackle Shop (Ocean Storm) | 20+ years industry experience

Decoding the Features: What Matters

This isn't just another plastic box. Here is what the features actually mean for you.

Rigid, Heat-Resistant Material: This is the most important feature. The plastic is UV-resistant and won't easily warp in the sun. This means the lid stays flat, helping to keep water out and ensuring your tackle stays protected.
Quick Latch System: A single, solid latch that you can open with one hand. It's a much stronger design than the small, separate clips that are known to snap off after a few seasons of use.
Stackable Design: The trays are designed to lock together neatly. This is great for organising a boat hatch, the back of the ute, or your shelves at home, turning a messy pile of trays into a stable "stack".
Rigid Dividers: The dividers are designed to lock in securely, which helps stop small items like swivels and hooks from sliding underneath and mixing into other compartments.

Pro-Tips for Your Tackle Trays

There are two things we always tell customers in the shop about new tackle trays.

  • The "Worm-Proof" Warning: This is the most critical piece of advice. This tray is "worm-proof" for *standard* PVC soft plastics. You must NEVER store your Z-Man (TPE) or Nomad (TPE) plastics in this tray. The TPE material will have a chemical reaction with the plastic and will melt the tray, ruining both. Always keep your TPE plastics (like the Switcher Shrimp) in their original packaging.
  • Using the Labels: The tray comes with re-writable labels. Use them. Label one tray "Jigheads," another "Hardbodies," and another "Terminal." It seems simple, but it's the fastest way to find your gear and stop wasting time on the water.

Technical Specifications

The RapStack comes in the two most common industry sizes: "3600" and "3700". This makes them compatible with most tackle bags designed for these tray sizes.

3600 Size Models (27.6cm x 18cm x 4.3cm)

Model Description
3600 Standard The standard tray with customisable dividers for lures and tackle.
3600 Open An open, single-compartment tray for storing larger items like tools or leader spools.
3600 Open Foam An open tray with a foam insert, ideal for holding jigheads or hooks securely.

3700 Size Models (35.6cm x 22.7cm)

Model Depth Description
3700 Standard Standard (4.3cm) The standard, large tray with customisable dividers for big lures and tackle.
3700 Deep Deep (8.2cm) A deep tray with dividers, perfect for holding large hardbodies or bulk items.
3700 Deep Open Deep (8.2cm) A deep, single-compartment "bulk" tray for big gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this RapStack 3700 Standard tray fit in my 3700-size tackle bag?

The "3600" and "3700" are industry footprints (length x width), and the RapStack (35.6cm x 22.7cm for the 3700) matches that. However, the height is 4.3cm, which is slightly shorter than some other brands which can be 5cm. It's a good idea to measure your bag's slot height first.

Is the Rapala RapStack Tackle Tray Box waterproof?

No, it's not designed to be 100% waterproof like a sealed dry-box. However, the rigid, warp-resistant lid provides a much better seal against rain and spray than a cheap tray whose lid has warped in the sun.

What's the difference between the "Standard" and "Open Foam" models?

The "Standard" (Tackle Tray) model comes with all the plastic dividers so you can create lots of small compartments for lures and hooks. The "Open Foam" model has no dividers, and instead has a foam insert in the bottom. Anglers use this for pre-rigging jigheads or storing treble-hooked lures, as you can stick the hooks directly into the foam to stop them from rattling around.

Will small items like hooks or swivels slide under the dividers?

This is a common problem with cheap trays. The dividers in the Rapala RapStack Tackle Tray Box are designed to be more rigid and lock in securely, which helps prevent small terminal tackle from migrating between compartments. It's a much better system than the flimsy, loose dividers on no-name boxes.

What are the "integrated feet for vertical storage" for?

This just means the tray has small feet that let you store it on its end, like a book on a shelf. It's a handy feature if you're storing them in a deep boat compartment or on a garage shelf where you can't just stack them flat and need to grab one from the middle.

What's the best way to clean my Rapstack tackle trays?

The easiest way we've found is to take all your tackle out, wash the tray with warm, soapy water to get the salt and gunk out, and let it air dry completely in the sun before you put your gear back. The rigid plastic on the RapStack won't warp or go brittle like old, clear trays used to.

A solid, stackable storage system that solves the frustrations of cheap tackle trays. Choose your Rapala RapStack Tackle Tray Box size and get your gear organised.
