The beauty of a 40 and 55 size reel is that it gives you genuine access to the beach, the rocks and a bigger class of fish. Doing it with the Okuma AV40X or the AV55X ensures you are doing it in style, reliability, and quality at an affordable price.
This size reel will see you dominate the inshore salt water fishing grounds. Classed in the medium size bracket the 40 and 55 are you first port of call for an all-round general purpose workhorse. Your ability to spool up with a heavier line class with the backing of a 6 or 9kg drag will see you tackle Drummer, Tailor, Big Bream and smaller pelagic species from the rocks. From the beach you have access to all the regular species such as Whiting, Dart, Flathead and Bream but you will also be well placed should you choose the bigger model (55 size) for chasing Jewfish, Big Salmon and Big Surfside Tailor. If you’re fishing the bays harbours and rivers from land or boat, staying with the 40 will be a better option but is still awesome for light surf work. With the 55, you are tackling everything on the beach as well as chasing snapper outside the heads, including mixing it up with the super-fast surface feeders. More than likely you will be fishing with flesh baits and even live baits.
The Okuma Avenger X Fishing Reels, 40X and 55X, are exceptional reels for the price. Make your selection and drop it in your basket now.

Fishing Applications and Fishing Rod Suggestion Guide
Matching a rod is pretty straight forward. The 40 reel will suit 6 to 7ft Barra or snapper rod in the 4 to 10kg class. Fit it up to a 10ft model in the 3 to 5kg class for light surf action. The larger 55 will be great with a Barra or Snapper model as per the 40 but a 10 to 11ft surf rod rated to 6kg would be perfect. For the general purpose rig hook your 55 to an 8 to 9ft general purpose spin rod in a 4 to 8kg class. See our handy guide here also for more info on reel sizing
The medium reels are an outstanding choice for general purpose, lightweight go anywhere reels. Great for bays harbours rivers and also good for insure boat work, the beach and rocks.
