There is nothing that says, ‘Australian Fishing’ more than an Alvey Reel. The unique and instantly recognisable side cast, strapped to an inordinately long rod, pointed at a beach side gutter somewhere from one of Australia’s 35000 kilometres of beaches, carries with it the richness of Australian angling history. No fishing reel is simpler. No reel more durable, and no reel comes close to the connected feeling of a battle with a fish.
Think of Alvey and you see the famous reel in the hands of an old salt beach angler, behind him, up the beach a little, a bucket full of Whiting caught on beach worms and nippers. There are a few bonus Aussie Salmon and Tailor in this mix. He’s beyond happy, and he wouldn’t trade his Alvey for all the egg beaters in Japan.

Alvey is a true blue Aussie company. Born in the 20’s, a humble beginning, Alvey became a family affair when Ken Alvey commenced a partnership with his father. Timbers, alloys and Bakelite would be the primary materials for the Alvey reel, the famous Alvey shape and action well and truly established. By the second half of the 30’s Alvey produced its first catalogue.
With little variation in materials over the ensuing decades, it was the 70’s when spools were now manufactured from Phenolic Resin and Fibreglass. A few years later, Cedar was replaced completely with a new material mix of Polyester and Fiberglass. The Alvey is now looking like the famous Alvey we all know.
The 90’s saw further development with the traditional star drag joined by a lever drag alternative. An option that has become popular with enthusiasts. Vented spools and back plates appeared at the turn of the millennium. It was a clear sign that Alvey would continue to develop their reels, incorporating contemporary design ideas into the famous Alvey design.
Alvey have a model for beach, Rock, Estuary and the blue water. There are general purpose models for the undecided as well as modern adaptions suitable for fishing trends like kayak fishing. In all this time, one thing has remained the same. There are very few moving parts. They are the easiest reel to maintain. They can take some serious sand and salt punishment and with a little love, will last you until you can fish no more.
